Post-Operative Instructions for oral surgery
In order to heal optimally, follow these intructions
Anesthetic
Be cautious when eating solid food until the anesthetic has worn off to avoid accidentally biting yourself.
Post-Op Medication
Alternating ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) has been proven to be efficient in reducing post-operative pain. Do not exceed the recommended maximum dose for each drug. If prescribed antibiotics, take the medication as indicated.
Swelling
Some swelling is expected when healing. Apply ice packs in 15-minute increments throughout the initial 72 hours to reduce swelling.
Dry Sockets
Prevent dry sockets by not: smoking, sucking through a straw, spitting forcefully, or working out for 3-4 days. If a dry socket occurs, there is a distinct throbbing pain in the jaw and a foul taste/smell 3-5 days post-extraction. Call our office to be seen immediately for treatment.
